| Pre-Dance | For three-year-olds, Pre-Dance offers dancers a very imaginative approach to dance. Pre-dancers use many classroom props, including magical wands, silly bean bags, and maracas to encourage creativity, balance, rhythm, and more. Pre-dancers will also use the mats to learn the very basics of tumbling. | Creative I and II | Creative I and II offers four-, five-, and six-year-old dancers their first experience with ballet. Dancers will learn basic dance steps including plies, tondues, proper arm placement, jumping jacks, and more. Creative dancers will also use the mats to learn the basics of tumbling. | Pre-Ballet | Pre-Ballet is offered to 1st and 2nd Graders. This 45-minute class introduces barre work in a fun, educational environment, giving dancers a strong ballet foundation. Dancers learn basic ballet exercises at the barre and on the floor. | Pre-Jazz | Pre-Jazz offers 1st and 2nd Graders their first introduction to a traditional jazz class. Dancers will learn basic jazz/stretching exercises and will learn steps in the center of the studio and going across the floor. The purpose of this 45-minute class is to begin building a proper jazz foundation for dancers, often to music your children know and love. | Tap | Straub Dance Center offers tap to children ages four and up. Because tap is a very aerobic activity, it is offered primarily as a 30-minute class with some options for 45-minute sessions. Students learn tap steps in the center of the classroom and steps that travel across the floor. As a step-based form of dance, difficulty will increase with the number of completed years of tap. | Girls – leotards and tights Girl Shoes – 2nd grade and below should wear black tap shoes with a ribbon or elastic strap, older students should see the SCHEDULE for shoe assignments specific to each class Boys – all should wear black lace-up oxford tap shoes, white t-shirts, and black pants Note: if you have tap shoes that fit, there is no need to purchase anything new until we get closer to the recital | |
| Jazz | Dancers in the 3rd grade and above may enroll in a 60 or 75-minute jazz class, where they will stretch every muscle from their necks to their toes. Dancers will work on learning steps in the center and going across the studio floor. | Ballet | At Straub Dance Center, we believe ballet is the core of all dance, and as a result, ballet is highly encouraged by our staff. Dancers in 3rd grade and above may enroll in an hour-long ballet class (advanced ballet classes may be up to 90 minutes) where dancers will focus on proper ballet technique. | Girls – pink ballet slippers, leotards, and tights Boys – black ballet slippers, white t-shirts, and black pants | |
| Hip Hop | Hip-hop classes are offered to dancers in grades K-12. They are very aerobic and are either 30 or 45 minutes in length. | Pointe | Straub Dance Center allows dancers who show strength in ballet to enroll in a 30-minute pointe class. Dancers must be enrolled in three weekly ballet classes in addition to pointe and obtain permission from the Center’s Artistic Director, Suzy Straub, before enrolling. Dancers will start with strength-building exercises and build on pointe skills as the year progresses. | Girls – pointe shoes, leotards, and tights | |
| Super Special Dancers | Straub Dance Center works closely with families who have dancers with special needs and abilities. Staff will find the perfect fit for each ability so that each child will develop their full movement potential and increase balance, flexibility, mobility, and confidence. | Acro Dance | This class is for dancers ages five and up with different skill levels and experience. It is for children who want to build strength and flexibility in a safe and controlled environment. Acro is either 30 or 45 minutes, and students are placed on skill level. Dancers will not advance until instructors are confident in strength and technical ability—for your dancer’s safety! | Girls – leotards and tights Boys – white t-shirtx and black pants No loose-fitting clothes. Be able to be barefooted (with feet slipped out of tights – girls should consider convertible tights) |
